Go Snag-fishing, Seward

What: Every year a huge run of red salmon comes up Resurrection Bay to swim up river. During this window in early June you can catch fish right off the shoreline in Seward way late into the night with the endless summer sun.

When to go: Snag fishing season typically runs just a few weekends spanning from late May to mid June, with early June typically being the best window.

There are many places to snag fish off the shoreline, but one of the most popular is a large campground/parking area on the north end of Resurrection Bay.

Tips:

  • Unlike fishing in the kenai or russian river, you don’t have to floss your red salmon. Since “snagging” is allowed, many people fish out there with large treble hooks.
  • You’ll need to look up the ideal tides to find the right time to fish – the best window is typically the hour before and the hour after peak tide, which will happen twice per day.
  • Make sure you bring full chest waders since the water can get quite deep while walking across the shoreline. Be careful where you step – we often saw people misjudging their steps and falling fully into deep streams.
  • One of the best experiences is to fish the late high tide – we were fishing until midnight under the glow of the midnight alaskan sun and it’s hard to beat that experience!
