Hike Liberty Falls Trail, Chitina
What: Liberty falls is a 2.3 mile out and back hike near Chitina that’s rated as moderate. This is a great hike to break up the drive when heading out to McCarthy, or even if staying in Chitina for some fishing.
When to go: Ideally accessed in the peak summer months between June and September.

The trailhead isn’t super obvious, but you can use one of the links above. There is a grassy open area with parking spots for a few cars (usually not crowded).
Tips:
- The trail has an initial steep-ish climb, but eventually you’ll get a high up ridge with amazing vistas of the surrounding valleys. On a clear day you can see many of the majestic peaks of Wrangell St Elias National Park.
- Keep going along the ridge until you get to a lookout point that looks down at the lake. You can choose to go down to the lake if you have time or just enjoy the views from the lookout and turn around.
- The mosquitos can be really bad in this part of the statement – bring lots of bug spray!
- After the hike it’s worth stopping in at the Liberty Falls state recreation area just further down the street. Here you’ll see a beautiful waterfall that you can play around and get great pictures.
