Tips:

  • Getting to Haines takes a bit of work – most people access Haines via cruise in the summer, but you can also drive there via the main highway system connecting Canada and Alaska. You can also fly there or take a ferry from Juneau.
  • If you have your own kayak, it’s easy to drop in to the lake and enjoy it. If you’re not traveling with a kayak, there are multiple tour companies that offer guided kayak tours of the lake.
  • It’s worth spending at least 2 to 3 hours on the lake and exploring both sides of it. There are many waterfalls that are only visible once you start kayaking further into the lake.
  • Unfortunately there aren’t very many beaches to dock on to. This is a very popular bear area as well, so beaching along the lake may not be a good idea anyway.
