Ski Culross Island, Whittier

What: Culross Island is a beautiful island in Prince William Sound that is perfect for some spring skiing accessed via boat.

When to go: Ideally accessed in the winter months where there is good snowpack, and good conditions ride out to the island in your boat. We have targeted March/April as the ideal months to get out there such that there’s plenty of daylight to give time for boating and skiing all day.

Tips:

  • Drive to whittier with your boat and drop in at the main boat ramp. Make sure you check the whittier tunnel schedule since it is only open for one way traffic at alternating schedules throughout the day. You’ll want to make sure you don’t miss the last return window at the end of the day.
  • From whittier, the boat ride to culross island can take a few hours depending on how fast you go. Once you approach the island, take some time to scout out the coast line for a good place to dock relative to which peak you want to ski. The link above marks the cove that we specifically docked in on the west side of the island. From here we converted to a smaller shore boat, and found a good beach to land on. Luckily the day we went, the snow line was almost down to the water, so we were able to put on skis & skins shortly thereafter. It is unlikely that there will be existing skin lines established, so slowly pick your path up the mountain depending on the peak that you want to hit. We climbed for 1 to 2 hours until we reached the top of our desired peak. The snow conditions were great, and skiing was incredible with views of prince william sound. Get back to the boat and enjoy a good beer in the sun.
