Hike or ATV to Crown Point Mine, Seward

What: Crown point mine is an old mine road near Seward that offers an amazing opportunity to ride your ATV to the top of a mountain and enjoy stunning views of Kenai lake. The trail climbs about 3000 ft over an 11 mile round trip – it’s fairly easy on ATV, but would be considered a Hard hike.

When to go: Best to go in peak summer months when the trail is clear of snow between June and September.

Tips:

  • The best place to park is just off the Seward highway at the “Vagt Lake” trailhead just across the train tracks. From here, ride your ATV further up the road which will eventually turn into a narrow path just wide enough for a four wheeler.
  • The trail can get fairly muddy and bouldery, but is doable on most ATVs. Once you clear the tree line, you’ll start to see amazing views of the surrounding valleys and the glacier blue kenai lake.
  • Once you get to the very top, you’ll see a small area to park your ATV. From here you can explore the valley on foot and climb the surrounding peaks to enjoy even better views. There are a few mine caves around, but it can be dangerous climbing in there without appropriate equipment.
