Tips:

  • The trailhead is fairly easy to find with a marked parking area directly off the Nabesna road. You will see a clear trail heading up the skookum volcano valley.
  • The first few miles are easy walking on a trail, however, you will eventually get a point where you will need to cross the main stream multiple times. There are multiple rock cairns to follow, but sometimes you will just have to find your own path depending on water levels. You may have to cross the stream 5+ times until you finally get back on a consistent trail.
  • If you have extra time, you can make it all the way to the top of the ridge and come down the other side back to the Nabesna road to make a loop. However, the hiking on the other side of the ridge can be very slow going with rock hopping and route finding.
  • Try to hit this area on a clear day to enjoy the best views. As usually carry plenty of bear spray and water.
