Visit Haines

What: Haines is a stunning town in southeast alaska offering an endless list of amazing activities. Most access Haines via a cruise stop, but it’s well worth visiting Haines for a multi night stay as well.

When to go: Can be accessed year round. Haines offers amazing summer activities from hiking to kayaking, but is also a premier ski destination to visit in the winter.

How to get there: If not on a cruise stop, Haines can be accessed via the main highway that connects Canada and Alaska. Alternatively, the easiest method is likely to fly to Juneau and then take the ferry or a small jumper plane over to Haines.

Tips:

  • Some of the best activities to do in Haines include kayaking chilkoot lake, rafting chilkat river, taking a drive down the chilkat valley and seeing hundreds of eagles in September/October, and enjoying many of the hikes in town.
  • Haines has plenty of airbnb and hotel options for accomodation. There are a few great restaurants in town, but know that most of them close fairly early in the evening. For drinks, enjoy the chilkoot distillery or haines brewering company.
  • It’s well worth driving as far south as you can go to enjoy some stunning views of the surrounding valleys. You can also enjoy some amazing views by hiking up Mt Ripinski.
  • If you have time to spare and find a clear day, it’s also worth taking a flight tour of glacier bay national park. You can find fairly inexpensive flights exploring the east or west arm.
  • This area gets significant rain, so come prepared with plenty of warm and dry gear.
